COMEDY – David Brenner

Fact: GOD loves to laugh. Fact: David Brenner has made GOD laugh for over forty years. Fact: GOD misses the HBO Comedy festival in Aspen. Fact: Gram Slaton and David Brenner worked really hard to bring a stream of comedy into Aspen at the Wheeler Opera House this winter. Fact: They succeeded Big Time. GOD had the opportunity to watch (from 30,000 feet) last Saturday’s show, “What’s So Funny?” at the Wheeler. GOD laughed – a lot. The comics culled from a list of hundreds included, Bryan Guttman, who led off the evening and while good, had a few glitches. Karen Rontowski, a comic who GOD had never seen, followed him. GOD loved her. She wanted to stab people and she did with her take on the world.  The highlight for GOD was the edgy, and very irreverent Ryan Stout. GOD had seen the young Stout at HBO a few years back and he caught GOD’s ear. This time Stout shined and exceeded any expectations GOD had about him. Ryan Stout is a man, a young man, on the move. The icing on the cake was David Brenner. Solid as he always is, Brenner moved around the stage, taking shots at everything and everyone that crossed his path from the current news stories. GOD loved seeing Brenner work, and can only think back and appreciate a career that included over 150 appearances on the Tonight Show. So, GOD says Bravo to Brenner, Slaton, and “What’s So Funny”. GOD says catch the next performance on Valentines Day.

MOVIES – Sweeney Todd & The Isis

GOD told the powers that be at the ISIS, to bring Sweeny Todd to Aspen over a month ago. But, GOD was told it wasn’t coming because the ISIS only had four screens and Sweeney would not play well in Aspen. GOD is not happy with the ISIS deciders (Think George Bush). GOD wanted the people to be able to see the visual extravaganza on the “big” screen, and don’t forget GOD wasnot in favor of replacing one of the “big” screens with another retailer – albeit a fine one.  No, GOD was not going to send lighting their way, but remember ISIS people, GOD is always watching. In respect to Sweeney, GOD guesses a number of Academy nominations swayed the earlier decision to skip the film. Yes, GOD loves a pregnant teen comedy as much as the next person, but enough Juno already. Considering Depp’s connection to the almighty Hunter, Depp and Sweeney need to be in Aspen, and now they have. GOD knows the film might be gone by the time you read this. So, consider this a reminder that GOD would have been better served with an extra movie screen and popcorn, instead of an extra jean opportunity, and a red bull. GOD love movies – and don’t forget it.
